My Perspective: A Warrior with Cerebral Palsy
by Katie Griffith, guest contributor from Phoenix, AZ
Hello, my name is Katie and I am a CP warrior. Why, you might ask? I have been through hell and back to overcome my disability one step at a time.
Growing Up
Particularly in high school in 2006, I remember trying to navigate the halls with crowds of many students who didn't know the need for accessibility, and not moving out of my way, as I tried to navigate the halls. I remember teachers telling me I was a retard for my learning disability in math, a condition caused at times with cerebral palsy. As a kid, I remember my mom taking me to occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech therapy, tirelessly hoping that one day we would find a cure for CP.
Not Giving Up
I still receive countless treatments to help with my cerebral palsy and spasticity. I know that one day with enough awareness in months like this that we will finally cure. Until then, I will live as independently as I can, with what I have, and continue to be an advocate and cerebral palsy warrior for myself and others.
Happy Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month!
