Join the Arizona Department of Economic Security and the Arizona Developmental Disabilities Planning Council for its latest webinar: "How to Save Money with AZ ABLE Accounts"
Arizona launches its long-awaited ABLE program on March 5. Learn about the ins and outs of the new AZ ABLE program with Executive Director Brittaney Chipley.
The session will take place Friday, March 2 from 9:30 - 10:45 A.M.
Millions of individuals with disabilities and their families depend on a wide variety of public benefits for income, health care, and food and housing assistance, but these individuals are ineligible for benefits if they have more than $2,000 cash savings and retirement funds. ABLE programs create Section 529 tax-exempt savings accounts for disability-related expenses, including:
- accessible housing
- transportation
- personal assistance services
- assistive technology
More details: AZ ABLE accounts allow earnings to grow tax deferred and account owners the ability to withdraw earnings to use toward qualified disability expenses. Account contributions are limited to $15,000 per year; however, beneficiaries who are employed can potentially have a higher contribution limit of up to $27,060 due to the newly passed ABLE to Work. Contributions would not count against someone’s eligibility for food stamps or the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System, better known as AHCCCS. Once an ABLE account reaches $100,000, however, Security Supplemental Insurance (SSI) or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) payments will be suspended until the account falls back under $100,000.
