Supported-Decision Making webinar.
The City of Phoenix Mayor's Commission on Disability Issues, in collaboration with the Arc of Arizona and Disability Rights Arizona (formerly Arizona Center for Disability Law) presents Supported-Decision Making webinar.
During the 2023 legislative session, Governor Hobbs signed into law A.R.S. § 14-5722. This new law - Supported Decision-Making (SDM) - provides an alternative to guardianship for people with disabilities. SDM, recognized in many states and nations, allows the individual to form a team of supporters who will assist the individual with the processes of making decisions from different areas of their lives, from healthcare, financial, and educational.
Insightful takeaways about SDM:
a. SDM aligns with the disability rights movement in promoting the least restrictive alternatives.
b. SDM allows the individual to form a team of supporters with different areas of expertise to help the individual make decisions.
c. Individuals with disabilities should be given all available opportunities to maximize their autonomy and supported decision-making helps with that process.
