Social service providers such as social workers, case managers, and advocates who work with people with disabilities often have to maintain a careful balance between the independence of people with disabilities and providing the support they need.
To ensure the well being of the person with the disability, legal guardianship is often viewed as the only option available for those who choose to help adults with disabilities. Yet, legal guardianship is not always necessary.
Supported Decision-Making is a growing alternative to legal guardianship. It allows people with disabilities to maintain their rights while receiving the support they need to make well-informed decisions.
