In 2011 the Council was approached by the Arizona Bridge for Independent Living (ABIL) and the Arizona Center for Disability Law (ACDL) to assist in funding a conference focusing on the needs of African Americans with disabilities. Since the Council had identified African Americans as an unserved/underserved population (especially those with developmental disabilities) we jumped at the opportunity. The Symposium continues to grow each year as a sustainable project drawing in increasing numbers of attendees.
In late February of this year, Commissioner Bishop visited all of the organizations that comprise the Arizona Developmental Disabilities Network (ADDN) as created by the Developmental Disabilities Assistance and Bill of Rights Act, which included:
The Arizona Center for Disability Law;
The Institute for Human Development (University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities) Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff;
The Sonoran University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities, University of Arizona, in Tucson;
and the Arizona Developmental Disabilities Planning Council, in Phoenix where he took time with us to create the following videos:
